Track team stacks up against regional foes
By Chris Strunk
Last Updated: May 03, 2019

Facing many of the athletes they will see at regionals in a couple of weeks, the Valley Center High School girls track team placed second at the eight-team McPherson Invitational April 25, while the boys were third.

Teams they faced that will be in the Hornets' May 17 Class 5A regional at Wichita Northwest included McPherson, Hays, Salina South, Salina Central and Newton. Other teams in their regional are Great Bend, Wichita Heights and Northwest.

"We will have to be prepared to compete at a high level," Valley Center coach Troy Emig said. "There will be many quality athletes competing that day."

Valley Center turned in several solid performances at McPherson.

Alli Burke had one of her best outings of the season. She won the 100-meter dash and set a school record in the pole vault with 10 feet, which was good enough for third place.

Surrounded by McPherson runners, Kait McDonald placed third and Jalea Hoddy fourth in the 200-meter dash.

Hoddy followed with a second-place finish in the 400.

Sarah Schaar won the two-mile race and placed third in the one-mile.

Kenisa Meyer, McDonald, Lydia Smith and Burke placed second in the 4x100-meter relay.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Alyson Hill, Ruby Glawion, Whitney Quandt and Hoddy placed third.

Kenna Meyer placed sixth in the high jump.

Kenisa Meyer won the long jump with 17 feet, 5 inches.

Libby Schurle threw 111 feet, 7 inches to place second in the javelin.

Zach Williams brought home double gold. He won the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump.

Larry Wilson faced stiff competition in the 100-meter dash. Finishing in 11.12 seconds, he placed third behind a pair of McPherson Bullpup seniors — Gage Shook (11.08) and Brandon Yowell (11.11).

Max Fields won the 400-meter run in 51.88 seconds, nearly two seconds ahead of Salina Central's Riley Counts.

Kyler Meyer placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles and second in the triple jump, just behind Salina South's A.J. Johnson.

Fields, Logan Glidewell, Williams and Wilson were second in the 4x100-meter relay, finishing a half second behind the McPherson squad with Shook at the block and Yowell on the anchor.

Valley's distance runners also did well. Stephen Lybarger was second in the two-mile race, while Parker Francis followed at third.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Ray Flora, Diego Chavez, Francis and Lybarger placed second behind Wichita North.

In the throwing events, Dale Hatfield led the boys with a fifth-place finish in the shot put.
