FEATS OF THE WEEK: John McKissick of
Summerville, S.C., became the first coach at any level of football to win 600
games. (The most wins by a college coach is 488 and by an NFL coach 347.) He
reached the milestone when his squad beat crosstown rival Ashley Ridge, 37-21.
Now in his 61st season as a head coach (all at Summerville), McKissick, 86, has
a career record of 600-147-13 with 10 state titles. The only other coach at the
prep level with over 500 wins is J.T. Curtis, and his team is ranked No. 2 this
week. ... Gary Swenson of West Des Moines, Iowa, Valley earned his 300th
victory as his team clobbered Fort Dodge, 56-13. Also posting win No. 300 was
Tony DeMatteo of Lincolndale, N.Y., Somers when his Tuskers thumped Montrose,
Hendrick Hudson, 34-7. ... Arizona’s career record for passing yardage fell
during Cave Creek, Cactus Shadows’ 50-17 blowout of Phoenix, Shadow Mountain.
Cactus Shadows senior Bryce Kinsler (uncommitted) threw for 235 yards, pushing
his three-year total to 8,679. ... Sunnyvale, Calif., Fremont broke the Central
Coast Section single-game scoring record in its 90-56 onslaught against San
Jose, Harker. Running back Keenan Smith scored seven of Fremont’s touchdowns
and rushed for 348 yards while Harker quarterback Spenser Quash accounted for
all eight of his team’s touchdowns. ... For the second time this season,
Westminster’s Deryk Kern tied the Maryland record of seven touchdown passes in
a game. This time Kern accomplished the feat as his Owls breezed past
Leonardtown, 56-7. His total for touchdowns sits at 49, seven shy of the season
state record. ... Peter Warren of Grand Marais, Minn., Cook scored eight
touchdowns en route to breaking a state record with 52 total points during a
70-6 drubbing of Cass Lake-Bena. ... Andre Stoddard ran for 452 yards and eight
touchdowns for Greenville, S.C., St. Joseph’s in a 62-32 blowout of
Simpsonville, Southside Christian.
