FEATS OF THE WEEK: Two Florida running
backs are chasing the national all-time record for rushing yards of 11,232.
Senior Kelvin Taylor of Belle Glade, Glades Day had 201 yards in a 55-20
blowout of West Palm Beach, Summit Christian. That pushed the University of
Florida recruit’s total to 11,418 yards since his eighth-grade year. It is 186
more than the officially recognized record held by Ken Hall of Sugar Land, Texas,
since 1953. However, because Taylor’s total includes yards gained before his
freshman season, the National Federation of High Schools record book would
count his current total at only 9,874. ... Meanwhile, the Florida back with the
best chance to first eclipse Hall’s record is Yulee senior Derrick Henry. The
Alabama commit currently has 10,700 yards – just 532 from the all-time mark.
... The Washington single-game rushing record was broken twice on the same
night. Yakima, Eisenhower’s Branden Curtis ran for 481 yards during a 34-13 win
against Davis. If not for that performance, Blaine’s Mario Gobbato would have
set the record. He rushed for 480 yards to lead a 50-20 rout of Bothell, Cedar
Park Christian. ... Monty James had 547 combined passing and rushing yards with
eight total touchdowns to lift Mount Pleasant, Texas, past Hallsville, 54-49.
... Clairton, Pa., steamrolled Brentwood, 58-6, to extend the nation’s longest
winning streak to 57. Tyler Boyd sparked the Bears with 238 rushing yards and
six touchdowns on only 10 carries.
