FEATS OF THE WEEK: The first state champions of the 2004 season were crowned in Alaska. North Pole upset state-No. 1 West Anchorage, 44-13, at Anchorage Football Stadium. The Patriots are just the third school not from Anchorage to win a large school state title in The Last Frontier. Last week, Kenai defeated Soldotna, 20-14, to win its third consecutive state crown in the small schools division . . . Tom Jaworski of Omaha, Neb., Creighton Prep won his state-record-tying 293rd game with a 49-7 drubbing of Omaha Central. In 33 years, Jaworski has led the Junior Jays to 14 state-title games and eight championships . . . J.D. Melton of Myrtle Beach, S.C., tied a state record with eight touchdown passes in a 54-20 rout of Murrells Inlet, St. James. The senior has 2,307 yards and 27 touchdowns on the season . . . Pittsburg, Kan., St. Mary's-Colgan whipped Uniontown, 56-0, to extend its winning streak to 62. Only No. 3 Charlotte, N.C., Independence has a longer win streak (70), however the Patriots' last loss came in 2000. The Trojans are unbeaten since 1999.
