FEATS OF THE WEEK: The Ohio Division I state championship will reside in Cincinnati for the fourth straight year. No. 4 St. Xavier defeated regionally ranked Massillon, Washington, 24-17, before 20,227 fans at Canton's Fawcett Stadium. It is the Bombers' first title. Massillon, with the second most wins in prep football history, has yet to win a state championship since Ohio instituted a playoff system in 1972 . . . No. 15 Tulsa, Okla., Union whipped Mustang, 33-7, for its third 6A title in four seasons. Senior quarterback Casey Whorton finished the season with a state-record 42 touchdown passes and 3,776 yards . . . Regionally ranked Concord, Calif., De La Salle shut out San Leandro, 14-0, to win its 14th consecutive North Coast Section 4A championship . . . Regionally ranked Las Cruces, N.M., defeated Clovis, 17-7, for the Class 5A state championship. It was win No. 310 and the seventh state title for veteran coach Jim Bradley . . . No. 5 Duncan, Byrnes became only the fourth South Carolina team to win four straight state titles. The Rebels whipped Columbia, Richland Northeast, 51-8, in the Class 4A/II championship and finished the season outscoring foes by an average score of 52-10.
