KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A nationally televised 65-10 rout of then-regionally ranked Deerfield Beach last Friday night left no doubt that St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) would remain ranked No. 1 in this week's National Prep Football Poll. The impressive victory over the Bucks, shown to the nation on CBS College Sports, avenged the Raiders' only loss of last season. Meanwhile, there were three teams that moved into the Top 25 this week. No. 19 Allen (Texas) is back in the national rankings after hammering then-regionally ranked Plano, 56-23 . . . At No. 20 is Bellarmine (San Jose, Calif.), which beat state-ranked Valley Christian over the weekend, 27-16, is emerging as the top California team located north of Los Angeles . . . For the first time since 2001, a Utah team is nationally ranked. Two-time defending 4A champion Timpview is No. 25 after extending its state-record winning streak to 31 games with a 54-12 blowout of Springville.

FEATS OF THE WEEK: Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Aquinas showed a national television audience why it is ranked No. 1 in the National Prep Poll with a 65-10 blowout of then-regionally ranked Deerfield Beach. In a game televised by CBS College Sports, the defending 5A champion Raiders opened a 44-3 halftime lead and cruised to a victory against the only team to defeat them last season. Seven different Aquinas players had touchdowns including junior running back Giovanni Bernard, who scored on a 74-yard kick return and a three-yard run . . . Senior running back Washaun Ealey of Twin City, Ga., Emanuel County Institute broke the career state record for touchdowns during a 35-12 blowout of Wrightsville, Johnson County. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Ealey (who is committed to Georgia) had three touchdowns in the game to bring his career total to 113, two better than the previous record . . . The first state champions of the season were crowned before a crowd of around 2,000 in Anchorage, Alaska. In the small-schools division, Soldotna captured its third consecutive title and tied the state record with 29 straight wins in a 28-6 defeat of Kodiak. The large-schools title went to Anchorage, Service, which beat defending champ Juneau-Douglas, 22-14. About the National Prep Poll: Compiled weekly weekly since 1987 and distributed by World Features Syndicate and the Associated Press, the National Prep Poll is the nation's second oldest weekly high school sports rankings. Doug Huff of Student Sports compiled the rankings from 1987 until 1999. Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season. The National Prep Poll is the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and Web sites around the United States by the Associated Press national wire service. The National Prep Poll is the first high school football and boys basketball poll to released in the preseason and during each week of the regular season. Criteria considered for the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.
Jamie DeMoney has covered high school sports and recruiting for more than 15 years. He has compiled the National Prep Poll for World Features Syndicate and the Associated Press since 1999 and has also compiled high school rankings for Sporting News and RISE. DeMoney was managing editor of American Football Monthly and assistant national editor of All-State Sports/Highwired Sports. DeMoney is a graduate of the University of Iowa School of Journalism, and a member of the Football Writers Association of America and the United States Basketball Writers Association.
