KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- It was a tough opening weekend for nationally ranked teams as both National Prep Poll Top 25 teams that were in action suffered defeat.
Defending Prep Poll champion Cincinnati St. Xavier, which was No. 18 to start this year, was beaten 13-8 by Colerain. The Bombers returned only four starters from last season, two of whom did not play against Colerain because of injury.
Elsewhere in Ohio, preseason No. 11 Cleveland St. Ignatius lost 20-17 to city rival Glenville. The Tarblooders, who began the season ranked No. 28 in the PrepNation 101 preseason rankings, moved up to No. 12 in this week's poll.
Greenwood Center Grove, one of three Indiana teams in the Midwest Top 10 rankings, is the second new entrant in the new Top 25. The Trojans opened the season by blasting Ohio Division II power Dayton Carroll, 41-0.

Dropped out: Top 25: No. 18 Cincinnati, St. Xavier (0-1-0). Southeast: No. 10 West Monroe, La. (0-0-0). FEATS OF THE WEEK: Only one week into the high school football season, and defending Prep Poll champion Cincinnati, St. Xavier has already tasted defeat. The Bombers were upset, 13-8, by Colerain before around 15,000 fans at Nippert Stadium. No. 12 Cleveland, Glenville reigned supreme in an early season battle between Northeast Ohio's top two teams. The Tarblooders beat then-No. 11 St. Ignatius, 20-17, on a 30-yard field goal by Marvel Brooks at the end of the game . . . In Indiana, ESPN televised regionally ranked Carmel's 28-21 defeat of Indianapolis, Cathedral. Quarterback Morgan Newton suffered heat-related leg cramps but still led the Greyhounds back from a 21-7 first-half deficit. The Kentucky recruit had 194 passing yards, 89 rushing yards, and four touchdowns . . . No. 25 Greenwood, Center Grove entered the national rankings after blasting Dayton, Ohio, Carroll, 41-0. Georgia Tech-bound quarterback Jordan Luallen scored two rushing touchdowns . . . Indianapolis, Warren Central moved into the regional rankings after throttling state-ranked Merrillville, 42-0. Leave your comments and interact with other readers by clicking here. About the National Prep Poll: Compiled weekly weekly since 1987 and distributed by World Features Syndicate and the Associated Press, the National Prep Poll is the nation's second oldest weekly high school sports rankings. Doug Huff of Student Sports compiled the rankings from 1987 until 1999. Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season. The National Prep Poll is the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and Web sites around the United States by the Associated Press national wire service. The National Prep Poll is the first high school football and boys basketball poll to released in the preseason and during each week of the regular season. Criteria considered for the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition. Jamie DeMoney has covered high school sports and recruiting for more than 15 years. He has compiled the National Prep Poll for World Features Syndicate and the Associated Press since 1999 and has also compiled high school rankings for Sporting News and RISE. DeMoney was managing editor of American Football Monthly and assistant national editor of All-State Sports/Highwired Sports.
