URBANDALE, Iowa -- California's ultra competitive Pac-5 Division has a new 'team to beat' with the emergence of Edison (Huntington Beach). The Chargers are ranked No. 15 this week after upsetting then-No. 6 Servite (Anaheim), 23-9.

Through four weeks of play, Edison is already the third different Pac-5 contender to be ranked in the National Prep Poll's Top 25.

Defending Illinois 8A titlist Maine South (Park Ridge) also enters the national rankings this week at No. 24. The Hawks' high-flying offense has picked up where it left off last season, scoring 50 or more points in four out of five games this season. Last year, Maine South scored over 50 in six out of 14 contests.

The National Prep Football Poll is compiled by high school sports journalist Jamie DeMoney with input from sportswriters, experts, and coaches. The national Top 25 and regional Top 10's follow with won-loss records:

FEATS OF THE WEEK: ESPN2 televised the much-anticipated battle between No. 9 Lakeland, Fla., and Concord, Calif., De La Salle at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, Calif. Lakeland came away victorious, 31-30, after denying the Spartans the end zone on a two-point conversion attempt in overtime. Senior quarterback Jarred Haggins (Florida St.) passed for 169 yards and two touchdowns for the Dreadnaughts. Lakeland and De La Salle each have won National Prep Poll titles this decade . . . The spread formation continues to revolutionize high school offenses, and passing records continue to fall. At least three state marks were broken over the weekend. Senior Jason Fracassa of Sterling Heights, Stevenson became Michigan's all-time leader in passing yardage during a 28-21 defeat of Macomb, Dakota. The 5-foot-9 Fracassa threw for 273 yards, giving him 7,559 yards for his career. He is the grandson of Michigan's all-time leader in coaching wins, Al Fracassa of Bloomfield Hills, Brother Rice . . . Junior Derek Buganza passed for a Pennsylvania single-game record 594 yards with six touchdowns as Brockway routed Duke Center, Otto-Eldred, 74-28 . . . For the second time in three weeks, Mark McDonagh of Riverside, Ill., Riverside-Brookfield broke the state record for receptions in a game. McDonagh had 25 catches, good for 244 yards and two touchdowns, in a 48-7 rout of Elmwood Park.

About the National Prep Poll: Compiled weekly weekly since 1987 and distributed by World Features Syndicate and the Associated Press, the National Prep Poll is the nation's second oldest weekly high school sports rankings. Doug Huff of ESPN RISE compiled the rankings from 1987 until 1999. Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season. The National Prep Poll is the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and Web sites around the United States by the Associated Press national wire service. The National Prep Poll is the first high school football and boys basketball poll to released in the preseason and during each week of the regular season. Criteria considered for the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.
