FEATS OF THE WEEK: The record-breaking career of Kenton, Ohio, senior quarterback Maty Mauk crescendoed in his team’s 74-22 blowout of Wellington in the Division IV playoffs. According to MaxPreps.com, Mauk (committed to Missouri) threw for 505 yards in the game, giving him 17,869 yards for his career and breaking the national record previously held by his brother Ben Mauk at the same school. Maty Mauk also tied a state record with nine touchdown passes in the game, pushing his national-record career total to 208. ... Senior Rushel Shell of Aliquippa, Pa., Hopewell tied a national record with his 38th consecutive game with at least 100 rushing yards. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Shell (Pittsburgh) ran for 268 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-13 win over Indiana in the 3A playoffs. Billy Sims – who went on to win the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma – also ran for 100 yards in 38 straight games while at Hooks, Texas, in the 1970s. ... Senior J.J. Jude of Paintsville, Johnson Central easily surpassed Kentucky’s career rushing record with a 437-yard performance in a 63-20 Class 4A playoff-opening win over Covington, Holmes.
