FEATS OF THE WEEK: The nation’s second-longest winning streak ended when Maryville, Tenn., knocked off nearby rival Alcoa, 26-19. The Tornadoes had won their previous 44 games. Regionally ranked Hampton, Va., Phoebus, which opens the season this week, has the longest active winning streak (45). ... The third longest streak in the country also was snapped when regionally ranked Cincinnati, Colerain beat Cocoa, Fla., 17-7, ending the Tigers’ run of victories at 38. The game was played at Colerain and televised by ESPN. ... No. 7 Seffner, Fla., Armwood traveled over 2,000 miles to play its season-opener. The Hawks defeated No. 18 Las Vegas, Bishop Gorman, 20-17, in another of 13 games televised over the weekend by the ESPN networks. ... Grand Rapids, Mich., NorthPointe Christian senior Eric VanSwol set a state record in his first career varsity start. According to the Grand Rapids Press, VanSwol threw seven first-half touchdown passes in his team’s 61-13 rout of Bridgman. VanSwol did not play in the second half. According to the newspaper, the seven touchdown passes also tied the state record total for an entire game. ... The Kansas City Star reports senior Jordan Walker rushed for 400 yards and four touchdowns as regionally ranked Kansas City, Mo., Rockhurst beat rival Blue Springs, 35-20.
