Zak Kromer, a star athlete and 2009 graduate of Taft High 7-12,
died in an apparent drowning over the weekend in a swimming pool in
Tempe, Ariz.
"Zak was a big part of our community, a good athlete and student
and member of the student council," Taft Principal Scott Reed said.
"It's not just a loss for his family, but Taft High School and the
entire community. The students from the past are all grieving. It's
just a really hard thing because it hits so close to home."
A memorial service has been planned for Sunday at 2 p.m. at
Voris Field, where Kromer starred as a fullback and linebacker.

Kromer, 19, was a multi-sport athlete and a team captain on the
2008 Taft football team before missing virtually the entire season
after injuring his knee on the first play of the second game of the
season on Sept. 19 in a 35-21 loss at Tillamook.
"This is such a big loss," his defensive position and current
Taft head coach, Ken Martin, said Monday night. "He was a good kid
and great student and played for us for four years. Unfortunately,
in that Tillamook game, he was not on the kickoff team, but
somebody didn't go out on the field, so he just ran out there and
he went down on the first play of the game on the kickoff and
injured his knee. He tried to come back and play late in the season
on it, but he just couldn't go. That was a big loss to us because
he had a very good junior season and we really felt going into his
senior season that he'd be a real force for us.
Then-Taft head coach Jack Wilkinson remembers Kromer, whose twin
sister Lauren also graduated from Taft in 2009, for his academics
as well as his athleticism.
"I was close to him and it certainly is a big loss," Wilkinson
said. "Zak was an outstanding student-athlete, one of the team
captains, and as team captains go, obviously a leader. What helped
make part of his leadership was the way he was willing to accept
and teach younger kids and encourage them. It's a devastating
loss."
