NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman keeper Hannah Dunn (Cookeville, Tenn.) made 16 saves in the Mocs 6-0 loss to Vanderbilt Sunday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
“Hannah was amazing,” UTC head coach J.D. Kyzer “There may have been just one or two shots that came right to her, but every other one she had to make the save and she showed up big.”
Dunn grabbed seven saves in the first half while allowing five goals, but in the second half she allowed just one goal and snared nine saves. Her 16 saves ranks her 10th at UTC for a single game.
Chattanooga held off the Commodores for the first 20 minutes of the game before Simone Charley, with her second goal of the season, ripped the net with a shot from the near right side to the far corner. That was quickly followed with a goal just 1:17 later, this time from the left wing from Colby Ciarrocca for her team-leading fifth. Both goals were unassisted.
Charley assisted on Vandy's third goal in the 29th minute off the foot of Asley Oswald. It would be nearly 15 minutes before the Commodores would break through the Mocs defense getting a goal off a bounce off the cross bar. Vanderbilt added a fifth goal before the half.
Chattanooga senior Crystal Mackezyk (Columbia, Tenn.) had the only shot of the game for Chattanooga coming in the first half. The Commodores added just one goal in the second half before the Mocs defense held on to keep it at six for the game.
“They shut us down so quickly. It was hard for us to get out on offense,” Kyzer said.
Vanderbilt outshot Chattanooga 47-1 while the Mocs had 16 saves. Both teams were issued five fouls in the contest and the Commodores had seven corners to none for UTC.
“Your goal in every game is to win,” Kyzer said. “We also wanted to get better and play together. They were a very good team and it's good for us to see where we want to be.
“Winning and losing is one thing, but we learned more about ourselves in this game.”
The Mocs fall to 1-6 overall and Vandy improves to 5-3 on the year. Chattanooga will remain on the road with a non-conference Friday night contest at UAB. The game is set to kick off at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
