ETSU softball entered the weekend in Macon with just one SoCon win under their belt - and as they hoped to turn their fortunes around, they came away with a second win after Saturday's doubleheader against Mercer.
Taylor Suchy had the big first game for the Bucs, driving in two of the Buccaneers’ three runs – including the game-winning sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth. Along with Suchy, it was Whitley Arnott registering her second straight complete game effort of the season - getting out of a jam in the final inning to hang on for the 3-2 eight-inning win.
In game two, the Bucs out-hit Mercer 8-6, but in turn 11 runners stranded, going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Despite jumping out to the lead with a run in the top of the first, the Bucs were held scoreless for the final six innings as Mercer evened the series with a 3-1 win.
With the split, ETSU moved to 8-26 overall and 2-9 in SoCon play, while Mercer – who entered the weekend tied for first place in the conference standings – is now 19-20, 8-3.
The Bucs and Bears will now meet one more time Sunday for the rubber match, set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
