CHATTANOOGA — This time when La Vergne faces Riverdale in baseball, seasons will be on the line.

Both teams lost Wednesday in the Class AAA state baseball tournament being held at the Spring Fling at Engel Stadium.

Riverdale lost to Knoxville Farragut 11-6, and La Vergne fell to Germantown 7-0. As a result, Riverdale and La Vergne will play today in the losers’ bracket.

“We should be ready to play,” La Vergne coach Craig Reavis said of the Wolverines’ game against Riverdale. “It’s going to be a battle for bragging rights. I hate that one of us has to leave, but I hope it’s not us.”

The Wolverines (25-14) couldn’t get going against Germantown (27-10). They amassed only three hits and got into scoring position only twice.

Germantown, on the other hand, connected for 10 hits. It scored at least one run in each inning but the first two.

“We played a good team,” Reavis said. “We may have panicked a little bit after they scored the first run. But they’ve been here, and they know what it’s all about.”

Matt Scott (12-4) pitched a complete game for the loss. He surrendered 10 hits and walked one. Mark Holliman (10-0) won for Germantown. He struck out six and walked one.

La Vergne didn’t get its first hit until the fourth inning when Draper Oakley got an infield hit. Next, Chris Camp lined out to first base and Oakley was doubled off.

Jeremy Rowe hit a double to right field in the same frame, but he didn’t advance. The Wolverines had only one more hit in the game.

“We didn’t catch any breaks,” Oakley said. “(Double plays) killed us. But you’ve got to hand it to Germantown, it’s a good team.”

Joey Davidson slapped a single to center field in the fifth inning, but nothing came of it. Justin Holman popped out to the pitcher, which resulted in a double play.

“With us coming off some big wins it’s kind of tough to take,” Camp said. “The breaks fell to Germantown. It’s a good baseball team. It’s here every year.”

The Wolverines got off to a rocky start. The first four batters struck out. Brandon Bobo was the first Wolverine to reach base when he drew a walk in the second inning.

“He’s a good pitcher,” Oakley said of Holliman. “He might be the best pitcher we’ve faced. He hit his spots.”

Leading 1-0, the Red Devils broke the game open with three runs in the fourth. Joseph Hunter started the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on an error. Holliman followed with a hit, and Jeff Kasser scored him with a base hit to center field. John Brower also had an RBI during the frame.

“Our kids got people to third and got them in,” Germantown coach Phil Clark said. “We manufactured runs. Anytime you get the lead, it relaxes the whole team. The kids did a good job.”

The Red Devils scored one run apiece in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

“We tried to make things happen,” Reavis said. “The guys did a great job of battling at the plate. They had some breaks, but we didn’t. If some of their breaks had gone our way it could’ve been a different ballgame. But, they didn’t. We’ve just got to get ready to play again.”
