HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: 13 area players honored all-state

The Tennessee Sports Writers' Association released its 2014 all-state softball teams, and 13 players from across the area were among the honored.

Softball

West Tennessee had six honored in Class AA, four in Class A and three in Division II.

University School of Jackson led the way with three players being named to the Division II team.

Infielders Haley Hall and Anna Rice and pitcher Ally McFarland were the Lady Bruins honored.

Hall, a senior third baseman, batted .441 with 40 runs, 17 RBI and six doubles.

Rice, the team's sophomore first baseman, batted .483 with 21 runs, 19 RBI and seven doubles. McFarland, a sophomore, was 20-7 in the pitchers' circle with a 1.66 ERA and 122 strikeouts.

West Tennessee had six make the Class AA all-state team after winning the last two state championships.

Dyersburg, the 2014 Class AA state champions, had two players on the squad in Emily Bennett and Paige Jones.

Lexington, the 2013 Class AA state champions, had two players make the team also in senior infielder Alaina Moore and senior outfielder Kellie Brooke Hayes.

Moore batted .484 with 52 RBI, 54 runs and 16 doubles, while Hayes batted .506 with six doubles, 19 RBI and 59 runs.

Chester County senior outfielder Elantra Cox, The Jackson Sun's 2014 Player of the Year and Ole Miss signee, was also named to the team after batting .528 with 35 stolen bases, 28 RBI, 60 runs and 11 triples.

South Gibson sophomore Aly Walker, The Jackson Sun's 2014 Hitter of the Year, was the sixth member on the team from West Tennessee after batting .540 with 62 RBI, 18 home runs and nine doubles.

In Class A, District 13-A had two representatives and District 15-A had two representatives on the all-state team.

McKenzie's Brooke Baucum, The Jackson Sun's 2014 Pitcher of the Year, was named to the team as a senior pitcher after picking up 19 wins with a 1.15 ERA and 265 strikeouts.

Dresden senior Abigail Lockhart was also named to the Class A team after going 24-6 with a 0.96 ERA, 170 strikeouts and 21 earned runs.

The two District 15-A players were both outfielders in Riverside senior Lauren Jones and Adamsville sophomore Gabby Morris.

Morris batted .464 with 54 RBI, 20 doubles and 52 runs, while Jones batted .561 with 41 RBI and eight home runs.

The TSWA All-State baseball teams will be released on Sunday.
