Prep programs on schedule despite water issue

Father Ryan, which cancelled its Wednesday workouts in football, girls soccer and volleyball because of the loss of water in the area, returned to its normal preseason schedule Thursday.

“Our water is back on,” athletics director Pat Lawson said. “We’re in good shape. Everything is on as scheduled.

“We had no water or low water pressure (Wednesday) afternoon. Because of that, we cancelled all activities — our second football practice, our volleyball practice and our soccer practice. We weren’t sure we’d have enough water to hydrate our athletes, the restrooms weren’t available, and we were unsure with the lack of water pressure of the sprinkler system for indoor sports.”

At nearby Franklin Road Academy, Wednesday’s practices were held prior to the outage and Thursday’s workouts took place without incident.

“If we’d had an afternoon practice (Wednesday), it would have been an issue,” athletics director Josh Flegel said. “But all our practices were in the morning, before it went out, so we were clear by then, and we had our morning practice (Thursday).”

Hillsboro football coach Craig Clayton said his team’s schedule was not affected by the situation.

“We had water (Wednesday),” he said. “If we don’t have any (Thursday), we’ll get some bottled water. I don’t think it’s going to have an impact.”

Hillsboro principal Terry Shrader said the school’s water pressure has not returned to normal and that a conservation mode has gone into place.

“We’re playing it by ear, minute by minute,” he said. “Right now, we have water. It’s just not the normal pressure. We’re shutting down the air conditioning to conserve water. But we’re playing it by ear.”

Overton football coach Steve Williams said his team’s Wednesday workouts had also been held before the situation came about, and that his team wouldn’t be affected on Thursday.

“Our kids were out by early afternoon (Wednesday), before it was a major problem,” he said. “We’ve got working water now; it’s just not at full capacity. But it shouldn’t be an issue.”
