Tusculum College wide receiver Justin Houston from Bradley Central and Carson-Newman sophomore defensive back Dante' Thomas from Dalton were among the first-team preseason All-South Atlantic Conference football players announced Tuesday, and Carson-Newman senior receiver Anthony Eubanks - son of the former Tennessee Temple basketball star of the same name - was a second-team choice. Houston also is a preseason All-American. Carson-Newman was picked to win the league.

• Ron Lane from Hixson won the $1,500 top prize in the Super Pro class last Saturday at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. He won with a 5.03-second burst on a 5.03 dial in his Chevrolet-powered dragster. Eric Boyd was second with a 4.89 run on a 4.88 dial in his 632-cubic-inch Chevy-powered dragster. Strip Hall of Famer L.C. Bigham of Tunnel Hill was the Foot Brake winner with an 8.49 run on an 8.48 dial in his 1974 Dodge Dart; Marty Goldsmith of Ringgold was second with an 8.15 on an 8.14 in his 1978 Dodge. Sam Osborn from Woodstock, Ga., was the Junior Dragster winner with Branson Jones of Rainsville, Ala., second, and Cynthia Warnock again had the low elapsed time (4.59) and top speed (149.6 mph) of the meet.

Fishing

• Brett Preuett of Louisiana-Monroe won the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket and a spot in the 2015 Bassmaster Classic by defeating Bethel University's Zach Parker in the head-to-head final Tuesday on Lake Chatuge. Each caught a limit of five bass; Preuett's totaled 13 pounds, 2 ounces, while Parker's weighed 11 pounds.
