Cougars host Red Hawks in Week Zero

By John Bailey and Marty AllisonThe Dickson Herald

Dickson County High football hosts Creek Wood tonight in a game that has started the two team’s seasons the last six years.

While it’s one of the most watched sporting events in the county every year, the game is only the start to a much longer season for both squads. The Dickson Herald recently sat down and talked to coaches and players from both teams about not only Week Zero, but the start of a new season of football.

DC head coach Troy Williams

“We’re getting better. Now I don’t know how that compares to where we need to be but each week we’ve got better,” the coach said. “We made a lot of mistakes but that’s what preseason is for…to correct the mistakes so we’re not doing it during game week.

“I’m very proud of how they’ve worked to this point even through the spring and through the summer. This team has worked hard to get ready.”

Coach Williams added that while the team hasn’t always looked solid in all aspects of the game, they’re has been some big moments to show they are close to where they need to be.

“We might look good offense and not so good defense or defense and not so good offense. Our kicking game hasn’t really come into play yet because most time it’s not live, but it didn’t help us when we went live against Beech. You know weighing all the positives and the negatives we just hope we made the corrections we need and that we’ve eliminated a lot of the mistakes going into this first game.”

One thing Cougar fans will notice tonight and the rest of the season is a new approach to Dickson County’s offensive attack. The usually ground and pound oriented team will be looking to air it more with a passing game led by quarterback Jacob Williams. Don’t worry though – Collier Wolcott, who already has proven he hits like a “tank on wheels” will fuel the team’s run game.

“It’s coming along well and for a team that has only been doing it for four months, just a little bit of spring and through July,” the coach said. “I tell you, this coaching staff has worked really hard on both sides of the ball to make sure we got a game plan.”

The seniors on the team are also geared up and ready to start playing live, ready for Week Zero and district play in 11-3A.

Ty Murphree:

We are focusing really hard to prepare ourselves to give us the best possible advantage. We have had a great week of practice. We are all excited but we realize we have to keep our heads on our shoulders.

Kincaid Lewis

I don't think there will be any easy matchup this year . This district is tough and all the teams have the chance to be a really tough matchup. I think our team can handle it if we put everything together. We have the potential to be a pretty good team and we expect nothing less

Isaiah Burns

I feel very confident about the upcoming season. We worked hard and are motivated about this season. The new offense is really coming together and giving the guys chances to do good things. Also defensively I feel very good about our guys making plays.

Cayce Daniel

I have high expectations for this year. Our new offense clicks and our defense has come a long way since last year. I'm really looking forward to this season. Our goal is to show everybody we have a new team with the same dream.
