Coaching calls Ryan receiver's father away

Most high school football players will have their fathers in the stands this weekend.

Tyler Shoop’s dad won’t even be in the country.

The Father Ryan senior receiver is the son of former Vanderbilt defensive coordinator Bob Shoop – who left with James Franklin and now holds a similar role at Penn State, which plays Saturday morning in Dublin, Ireland, against Central Florida.

Tyler, his younger brother Jay and mother Maura have remained in Nashville as Bob relocated for his new job.

“It’s kinda hard,” Tyler said. “He’s going to miss a lot of my senior year. But he’ll watch the games online.

“We talk every day. He’ll ask me about practice, and I’ll go through the whole practice with him.”

Given the nature of college coaching, being able to spend his entire high school career in one place has been a fortunate occurrence for Tyler. The Shoops came to Nashville prior to his freshman year after previously living in Williamsburg, Va., where Bob had been defensive coordinator at William & Mary.

“It’s probably hard for him,” Tyler said of his dad missing so much. “I’d say he’s holding up OK.”

Tyler said his mother and brother will join his dad in Pennsylvania at the end of the semester, while he will remain at Ryan through graduation.
