Chargers punish Bucs, rise to 2-0

McMinn Central won four games last football season.

The Chargers already have won half that many in 2014.

McMinn Central bullied Boyd-Buchanan 43-20 on Friday and used a running clock in parts of the third and fourth quarters.

"I was impressed with the fundamental way we played football tonight," Chargers coach Josh Goodin said. "Our guys had keys coming into the game, and they stuck to those keys."

The Chargers (2-0) punished the Buccaneers (0-2) on offense by rushing 41 times for 352 yards and with five ball carriers scoring touchdowns. They also received an efficient evening from quarterback Jackson Guy, who completed 10 of 12 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown.

The McMinn Central defense contributed a shutout through the first three quarters and helped build a 35-0 lead before the fourth quarter started.

"We were calling the right plays and we executed real well," said Guy, who rushed for 52 yards and a touchdown. "Our defense was outstanding. They'd almost always get the ball right back to us."

The Bucs totaled 281 yards with quarterback Cooper Hodge throwing for 188 yards and two touchdowns while completing 17 of 30 passes. Demaris Macon caught nine for 115 yards and the two TDs. Austin Jackson ran 18 times for 74 yards and a touchdown.

"They started a lot better than we did," Boyd-Buchanan coach Grant Reynolds said. "We didn't respond well in the first half."

The Chargers opened with a 10-play drive. It stalled when Jackson Long fumbled at the 9-yard line. But the defense responded by forcing Jackson to fumble on the Bucs' first play from scrimmage.

McMinn Central senior Luke Davis took the snap two plays later and cruised through the right side of the line for a touchdown.

"Our defense held them when we needed them to," Long said.

McMinn Central junior running back Jordan Brooks padded the Chargers' lead with an 11-yard touchdown run around the left side early in the second quarter.

The Bucs were on the move in the two-minute drill until Hodge lost the ball, and Kaleb Nichols scooped it up with 63 ticks to tock before halftime. The Chargers scored on a 20-yard pass from Guy to Ryan Dahle with nine seconds left in the half.

The Bucs moved the ball in the first half and outgained the Chargers by 6 yards. But two possessions ended on lost fumbles, two ended on fourth down, and the last ended with the Bucs taking a knee before the halftime horn.

Guy ran for a 13-yard touchdown and Long added a 67-yard score in the third quarter.

Macon broke the ice for Boyd-Buchanan on a 25-yard pass from Hodge to pause the running clock. It started again after Jace Johnson scored from 18 yards out.

The Bucs scored the final 14 points on a Hodge-to-Macon touchdown from 45 yards and Jackson's 1-yard run.

"I saw a lot of missed tackles," Reynolds said. "I saw some kids play through it when they could have laid down. They didn't."
