Westview tries to stay unbeaten vs. Milan

Westview head football coach Don Coady said his team hasn't had any secret plan or formula to winning the games they've won so far this season with a 4-0 record.

The Chargers have been just good enough each week.

"That might be the best way to put it," Coady said. "We're good enough to hang around until the fourth quarter, then someone will make a play – a run, a catch, a tackle – when we really need them to make the play."

After starting with a big win over Dresden, the Chargers have since recorded a one-point win over Huntingdon, an eight-point win at South Gibson and a three-point win over Ripley.

The Chargers will try to be "good enough" again this week in returning to District 13-AA play when Milan comes to Martin Friday night.

The Bulldogs have had a good season as well as they enter the game with a 3-1 record.

Coady said looking at Milan on film shows the program is trying things not typical of a Milan football team.

"They running out of the shotgun a lot more than they ever have," Coady said. "They haven't totally abandoned what they usually do, but they have a quarterback that does well in the shotgun.

"And [Milan coach Jeff Morris] is smart enough to alter his game plan to the athletes he has on his team."

Milan has one blemish on its record that came to Crockett County two weeks ago. Coady said there are some similarities between Westview and the Cavaliers, and they could possibly try some of the things that worked for Crockett. But not many.

"They are pretty salty up front and do some things better than we do, and we don't have a back like they do with that much speed," Coady said.

Quarterback Dallas Callins runs the offense and has had a few teammates make plays each week like Jason Hicks, Parker Beal, Landon Pitcher and J'von Cavitt. Tyler Langley is also consistent from his fullback position for quality carries.
