H.S. FOOTBALL: Westview rallies past Milan

Will Tucker

MARTIN – Milan and Westview have played many instant classics in their storied rivalry, and this year’s edition did not disappoint.

The Westview Chargers came away with a 15-14 victory over the visiting Bulldogs.

The resilient Chargers (5-0) overcame four first half turnovers and a 14-0 halftime deficit to score 15 consecutive points and remain unbeaten on the year.

“I was proud of the way they kept believing in themselves and their teammates, and they did the things they needed to do to win the ball game,” Westview coach Don Coady said of his players.

Milan struck first in the second quarter as Westview QB Dallas Callins’ pass was intercepted by Milan DB Brian Thomas to set the Bulldogs up with good field position at the Westview 27.

Milan (3-2) was able to capitalize on a 10-yard Marshall Harrison touchdown pass to Hayden Bolton in the back corner of the end zone.

Later on in the second quarter, Harrison again found a receiver in the back corner of the end zone as he threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Sturdivant to push the score to 14-0 Milan at the half.

Westview came out in the second half and scored on its first drive when Parker Beal ran it in from 12 yards out. Beal then caught a two-point conversion on a designed fake kick from Landon Pitcher to cut the score to 14-8.

The two teams traded punts for much of the rest of the half as the defenses came up with some big stops.

In the fourth quarter, Westview was able to put together an 18-play, 74-yard drive that featured three fourth down conversions and ended with a three-yard Callins touchdown pass to Jason Hicks to make the score 15-14.

Milan’s pass on the first play of its next drive was intercepted by Hicks, and the Chargers were able to hold on for victory.

Milan will host Christ Presbyterian Academy next Thursday night, and Westview has the week off.
