Jennings, Davidson lead Blackman to another blowout

SMYRNA – Give the ball to its playmakers and Blackman is hard to beat.

As they have done all season, quarterback Juaun Jennings and running back Charlie Davidson made big plays to lead the undefeated Blaze to a 49-14 victory over host Stewarts Creek on Friday night.

Tennessee signee Jennings completed 9 of 14 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score.

Davidson rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns to keep Blackman (5-0) perfect on the season.

“Great job by those kids,” Blackman coach Philip Shadowens said. “Great job by the receivers and great job by the offensive line. Certainly, it’s nice to get another win. 5-0 is the best record you can have after five games.”

The Blaze played sloppy at times, committing 12 penalties for 110 yards. But when it came to crunch time, Jennings and Davidson were the ones who got the ball.

“We didn’t do everything perfectly tonight,” Shadowens said. “I thought we were sloppy at times, we weren’t focused at times, but give Stewarts Creek credit for that. They played really hard.”

The Red Hawks came out on their first drive and drove down the field flawlessly. Quarterback Mason Hall led them on a 73-yard drive that only took seven plays.

He completed 4 of 5 passes on the drive and threw a 20-yard pass to Gary Lance at the 1-yard line. Hall took it in the end zone from there to make it 7-0 and give the Red Hawks (1-4) the early lead.

But it didn’t last long. Just 2:54 later, Jennings led the Blaze into the end zone on a 68-yard drive which only took six plays.

Jennings completed a 43-yard pass to Ronnie Killings to get the Blaze to the Stewarts Creek 23, then the quarterback scored on an option from Stewarts Creek’s 9.

After Jennings had an outstanding punt return to give Blackman the ball on Stewart Creek’s 19, the Blaze scored with 4:10 left in the first quarter to take a 14-7 advantage and never look back.

Davidson did all the work on the drive, which took only four plays. He had runs of 4, 10, 4 and 1 yards for the touchdown.

Then the Blaze scored five more times in the second, third and fourth quarters to stretch its lead to 49-7 and secured the win/

The Blaze accumulated 410 yards in the victory and Lorel Morton finished with 37 receiving yards.

“As coach says, our record is perfect right now,” Morton said. “We’re going to work to keep getting better and better, and work to the playoffs.”

Hall finished 10-of-21 passing for 83 yards for Stewarts Creek and Jasper Snowden added 64 rush yards on 12 attempts. Coach David Martin said he sees improvement from his team.

“They’re a good football team, and competition measures where you are,” Martin said. “We’re not that far away. That was a great opening drive. I’m proud of those guys. If we can eliminate a few errors here and there, our overall effort was as good as we’ve had.”
