MTCS stays perfect with 44-point blowout

UNIONVILLE – Senior quarterback Justin Winn threw for three touchdowns and also ran for a score to lead MTCS to a 66-22 rout over winless Community on Friday night.

Winn was 14-of-17 passing for 203 yards for the game and ran for a team-high 94 yards on just 11 carries to help the Cougars remain undefeated for the season.

The Cougars (5-0 overall, 2-0 in District 9-A) are off to their best start in school history.

MTCS led 20-0 after the first quarter. Tanner Green scored on a 1-yard run a minute into the game to give the Cougars a quick 6-0 lead.

Winn later hit Peyton Buckner for a 30-yard TD pass and then ran for a 12-yard score with 1:25 left in the opening quarter.

But the Cougars were just warming up. MTCS racked up 425 yards on 47 plays. Community (0-5, 0-2) managed just 205 yards on 50 plays.

MTCS grew the lead to 44-14 by halftime.

Green, who had 86 yards on just nine carries, had a 37-yard TD run to make it 28-0. Winn then found Griffin Harper for a 17-yard TD pass to make it 36-0 with 4:38 left in the half.

Community finally got on the scoreboard when Darian Pride broke a 78-yard TD run with 3:05 left in the half. However, Nick Merrit countered, scoring on a 9-yard run to make it 44-7 with 1:15 left in the half.

But the Vikings’ Tyler Broiles completed a pass to for a 10-yard TD reception to enter halftime down 30.

Merritt had a 4-yard TD run in the third quarter to make it 52:21 with 3:33 left in the third quarter. Winn followed with a 46-yard TD pass to Harper. Jordan Evans ended the scoring for MTCS by returning Tyler Hutchinson’s pass for a touchdown.

MTCS plays at Whitwell next week.
