High School Football Recap: Week 4

Sevier County (3-1) at Morristown West (3-2)

Hamblen County was the place to be Friday night as Morristown West hosted Sevier County. Quarterback Deuce Wallace completed 25 of his 35 pass attempts for 368 yards and a score, and Devante Matthew caught 12 passes from 125 yards to lead his team to a narrow win over the Trojans 28-21. It wasn’t the 63-28 clinic from a year ago; this one was a thriller. The Smoky Bears were plagued by turnovers early, one which Trojan Calvin Smith ran back 99-yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. But it was timely plays by the Bears that, Head Coach Tony Linginfelter said, made the difference in the game.

“We got some break early, but we couldn’t capitalize on them. We got the momentum back in the second half. I thought we played well up front and made plays when we needed to,” he said.

Sevier County will go on the road to try to upset Maryville. Morristown West looks to end their two-game skid against arch rival Morristown East.

Maryville (4-0) at Hardin Valley (2-2)

The Hardin Valley Hawks were blown away by South-Doyle last week and looked to bounce back at home against Maryville. They would acquit themselves well and played the Rebels closer than any other team this season.

But Maryville hasn’t lost a regular season game to a team outside of Alcoa for 13 years.

Hardin Valley led 3-0 early and their defense came to play. It would hold Maryville scoreless until a field goal in the final seconds of the first half. The Rebels would hold on to win 16-3.

Maryville faces Sevier County in Week 5. Hardin Valley goes on the road to face a tough Catholic team.

Oneida (4-1) at Greenback (4-1)

The USA Today High School Game of the Week featured two teams that would remain scoreless until the fourth quarter. Oneida’s Jake “Bam Bam” Lawson would punch it into the end zone to get the game’s first points of the night. But Greenback’s Jordan Anderson would answer with a run of his own for a touchdown to tie it up.

With 21 seconds left in the game, Lawson would score the game’s final points. In the final seconds, a Hail Mary heave to the end zone would prove futile as Greenback drops its first game of the season 14-7. Greenback stays home to face Rockwood. Oneida will play Oakdale.

West (3-1) at Farragut (1-4)

West was looking to string back-to-back wins while Farragut was searching for its second win of the season. The Rebels stuck first with a 24-yard connection between Seth Marshall and Alex Burch for the TD. Farragut would try to answer, driving the ball into West territory before it was picked off by Max Bacon who retuned interception to the Admiral 14-yard line. The Rebels would eventually take a 13-0 lead off of a double pass for 45 yards to Hayden Boyd.

The Ads would cut into the West lead with a Tanner Thomas 1-yard plunge to make it 13-7. On the ensuing West drive, the Rebels would give up a fumble and the Ads would take advantage and put another TD on the board to make it 14-13. Both teams would swap scores before going into the half 35-17. The Admirals would linger around in the third quarter before West would take control after a Marshall 1-yard score to make it 42-24 going into the fourth. For Week 5, West will travel down to Cleveland and Farragut heads to Hardin Valley.

Fulton (5-0) at Gatlinburg-Pittman (3-2)

Fulton going into this one was looking to extend their win streak to 26 straight games dating back to 2012. The home standing Highlanders would start strong though. On Fulton’s first drive, Falcon QB Adam Diggs was picked off by Carlos Sweeney in the end zone. The Falcons would not go away though. Very next drive Diggs would swing it out to running back D.J. Campbell who would take it 10 yards for the score. Fulton would do most of their damage on the ground though finishing with 324 yards and 6 touchdowns. Next week the Falcons travel to Central and GP hosts Cumberland Gap.

Central (3-1) at Powell (1-3)

This district matchup featured Powell, which is coming off of its first win of the season at Karns and Central, who only had one loss going into this matchup. Riley Gaul for Central came to play and had a remarkable catch from quarterback Austin Kirby, which would lead to a touchdown by Jadarius Sackie. Powell would come back with a touchdown from quarterback Connor Sepesi, who would tie the game at seven. Central would finish off Powell in the second half, 28-14. Central has the tall task of facing Fulton next week. Powell has a tough game against Anderson County.

Gibbs (3-2) at Halls (1-3)

Gibbs and Halls renewed their annual rivalry tonight and the Eagles and Red Devils did not disappoint. Halls would open up the scoring with a 6-yard TD but would botch the PAT for an early 6-0 advantage. Later in the quarter, playmaker Brendan Wilson had the answer for the Eagles sprinting 46 yards for the score. The score remained the same until the 4-minute mark in the second quarter when Halls would strike deep for a 55 yard touchdown and a 12-7 lead.

The Eagles would put together a successful 2- minute drill and punch in a 3-yard score from Silas Joiner for a 13-12 halftime score line. It was all Gibbs in the second half. The Eagles would score 14 unanswered points and would go onto win 28-12. Next week Gibbs has a big matchup against Oak Ridge and Halls travels to Campbell County.

Union County (2-3) at Pigeon Forge (3-1)

Union County trying to tie their win total from all of last year tonight with three. The Tigers would have something to say about that, though as they would control the game from the opening kick. Pigeon Forge would take a 35-0 advantage into the half. After holding Union County on fourth down to start the third quarter, the Tigers would cash in the night’s final points on a Tanner Sharp touchdown run. Next week, Pigeon Forge is back at home to take on Grainger and Union County is at Scott.

Kingston (1-3) at Alcoa (4-1)

Going into Week 4, Kingston was coming off of a win against Rockwood, but had their hands full against Alcoa. The Tornadoes made sure to put this one to bed early on their first possession. Star running back, Jaquez Tyson, on his first touch of the game, raced for a 75-yard touchdown run to put his team up 7-0 early. Then the game became sloppy. Three Alcoa touchdowns were called back due to penalties in the first half, but the Tornadoes still led 24-0 at the half.

Through three quarters, Tyson accumulated touchdown runs of 75, 9, 37 and 3 yards. He’d finish with 254 yards on 19 carries and four touchdowns. The Tornadoes whisked through the Yellowjackets 45-14. Alcoa stays at home to play Heritage in Week 5. Kingston will play Lenoir City.

Carter (3-1) at Austin-East (0-5)

Austin-East has struggled all season long and looked for its first win against Carter. The Roadrunners would lead 2-0 after an offensive mistake goes through the back of the end zone for a safety. With a chance to add on more, quarterback Darius Harper threw it to Victor Blair, making a wonderful grab, but Carter safety Zephaniah Nyane would pop it loose to the back of the end zone for a touchback. This was certainly a deflating moment for the Roadrunners. Carter would trail at the half 2-0, but came back to score 20 points in the second half to win 20-2.

Heritage (2-2) at William Blount (1-3)

The Heritage Mountaineers have been one of the pleasant surprises of the season, winning their last two games by 37 points a game. They would face the William Blount Governors, who have defeated the Mountaineers 17 straight times. This would be a thriller and one of the games of the season.

A big play late in the game would help decide the outcome. William Blount would stop the Mountaineers on third down and force Heritage to stop the clock with a timeout. They would then muff the punt, giving themelves good field position to set up a potential win trailing 48-47. With a minute remaining in the game, a William Blount 34-yard field goal would seal the narrow win.

The Governors hit the road to play Jefferson County. Heritage has its hands full with Alcoa.
