Ervin, Wilkerson Homer in Friday Exhibition

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Seniors Courtney Ervin (Seymour, Tenn.) and Marina Wilkerson (Hogansville, Ga.) each hit home runs Friday afternoon against Cleveland State in a fall exhibition at Frost Stadium.

The 10 inning matchup pinned the two programs against each other in a situational scrimmage, putting the teams in various scenarios chosen by the coaches throughout.

“I think it went really well,” Head Coach Frank Reed said. “We didn't keep score, but I know we scored a ton of runs, and our defense held Cleveland State to two runs.”

The Cougars were able to plate two runs on first-and-third situations against the Mocs, once coming on a squeeze.

“They bunted it back to Cori Jennings to score one,” Reed said. “Rather than going for the play at the plate, Cori elected to get the sure-out at first.”

UTC veterans claimed the starting nine through five innings while the freshmen were filtered in over the remaining five.  Junior pitcher Katie Henderson (Hixson, Tenn.) hurled four innings before giving way to Jennings (Bush Creek, Tenn.) and Kailey Palazzolo (Chino, Calif.).

In the field and in the order, freshmen J.J. Hamill (Chickamauga, Ga.) and Taylor Parker (Lynnville, Tenn.) also saw significant time in the game.

“I was really happy with the play of the rookies,” Reed said. “Kiley played the field, hit and pitch, and J.J. got some time at short and at the plate.”

The Mocs are back in action Oct. 3 and Oct. 4 as the team hosts the RBI Club Fall Classic at Frost Stadium.  The annual fund raiser has Georgia Highlands, Chattanooga State, Tennessee Wesleyan, Union and Cleveland State visiting the Scenic City.  For a full schedule of the fall season, click here.
