H.S. FOOTBALL: Brandon’s Beasts for Week 5

JTN

Another week of high school football has come and gone, and a few teams continue to separate themselves from the pack when it comes to wins and losses.

There are a lot of teams who appear to be close to each other in level of ability as 18 of the 32 teams in the Sun’s coverage area who have played six games already have between two and four wins.

That means there’s not a lot of room for error when it comes to teams vying for playoff spots throughout the month of October.

Line play and defense will have their roles in determining which teams continue to play well each week, and thus what happens in the trenches could determine who can win enough games to be selected by the Z-Plan rankings when the season ends on Halloween night.

Here’s a look at a few players who performed well enough this past week to be named among Brandon’s Beasts.

Tyler Garrott, Trinity Christian: The senior defensive back had seven tackles with a forced fumble and two recoveries, both of which were returned for 60 yards for touchdowns.

Zayveon Johnson, Bruceton: The back plays a key role on offense each week, but he came up with a number of big tackles for key stops in a high-scoring game this past week.

Cody Knuutila, Bruceton: The lineman did his job well in making stops and blocks on both sides of the ball to help the Tigers pull away.

Benji Smith, Adamsville: The Cardinals’ right tackle graded out at 88 percent and had three pancakes while allowing no sacks.

Isaac White, Gibson County: The defensive lineman was the anchor of a unit that allowed 53 total yards to get the Pioneers’ second win in as many weeks.
