Sherlin wins AAA State Golf in playoff

The mid-state was well represented at the Class AAA State Golf Tournament Wednesday at WillowBook Golf Club here.

Hendersonville’s Jacob Sherlin and Brentwood’s Cameron Smith finished Wednesday’s round tied at 140 (-4), to force a sudden-death playoff. Sherlin birdied the hole to walk away with the win.

“I was really happy and excited,” Sherlin said. “It’s my last year so it’s kind of sad at the same time.”

Sherlin bogeyed on the 18th hole to allow Smith to force the playoff.

“I thought I lost it, honestly. I really did,” he said. “And, then it turned out I was in a playoff.”

The Hendersonville High team entered the tournament as the defending state champions and followed it up with a 587 (+11) for a third-place finish.

“The team played probably as good or better than we have ever played in the state tournament,” said head coach Andy Gilley, “It just wasn’t good enough this year. Normal years I think the score we shot for two days, we probably walk out of here in first place. “

Brentwood finished runner-up as a team, shooting a 582 (+6). Brentwood entered the day in third place, but shot a -3 Wednesday to make a run at the title. Farragut took first place with a 579 (+3).

“The team came together well, I think they played excellent. It would’ve tasted better to come away with a win but very proud to have a runner-up position,” said head coach Bud Robison.

Dickson County’s Hunter Wolcott finished third with a 141 (-3). Cookeville’s Will Brooks, Blackman’s Tanner Owens and Dickson County’s Jack Story tied for ninth with a 143 (-1). Owens was co-leader with Sherlin entering Wednesday.

On the girls’ side, Rossview ran away with the team championship. The Lady Hawks finished the tournament with a 290 (+2), 12 strokes better than second-place Coffee County. It was the fourth-best girls’ team score in tournament history.

“We had a phenomenal day yesterday,” said Rossview coach Phillip Burkhart. “We were nine strokes up coming into today. We talked last night, we could just relax and play our game. To have that nine stroke cushion took a little bit of the pressure off.”
