Eagleville dominates Tigers for first home win

DNJ Sports Report

EAGLEVILLE – The Eagleville football team earned its second straight win on Friday night by defeating Fayetteville 42-12 at Talon Field for its first home win of the season.

“It was just a big for the program,” Eagleville coach Steve Carson said. “It was our first win at home. It was our first district win. This is the first time we’re above .500 this year and going back to the quarterfinal game last year,we had lost four in a row in this stadium. I think the guys had about enough of that.”

The Eagle (4-3, 1-2 District 9-A) have won three out of its last four contests.

Running back Carmeron Lawson scored four touchdowns and rushed for more than 200 yards in the victory, while quarterback A.J. Garza added 100 rushing yards.

“We were able to get our running game going (Friday),” Carson said. “The guys up front did a job of opening up holes for (the runners) to go through.”

The Eagleville defense, led by James Merritt’s double-digit tackle performance, forced a Fayetteville (2-4, 1-3 9-A) turnover on the first play of game that Garza and the offense turned into point a few plays later.

The Eagles led 14-0 and 21-0 midway through the third quarter before the Tigers trimmed their deficit to 21-12 to begin the fourth quarter.

Eagleville scored 21-fourth quarter points to seal the victory down the stretch.

“We finished drives,” Carson said. “That was something we weren’t doing early in the year.“
