H.S. HOOPS SUPER SENIOR: Sacred Heart's Breana Hunt

Michael Odom

Building a high school basketball program is not easy, especially in rural West Tennessee, where so many teams have found success in the postseason.

Breana Hunt has been with the Sacred Heart girls' basketball program from the start and has adapted to multiple changes with new coaches and new TSSAA classifications.

Hunt enters her senior year with the Lady Knights and is hopeful for the teams to take a step up this season.

"I expect us to have a successful season," Hunt said. "The girls have been dedicated this past summer, and I think we will go a lot further than people expect."

This is the second season that Sacred Heart has been a Division II-A school. The adjustments have been tough at times, but Hunt has looked for the positives.

"It has been trying at times, but seeing the progress has been exciting," Hunt said. "The two seniors – Alaina Graham and I – have helped with that."

There are games that she and the team have circled for this season.

"Last year, we did not play up to our standards in the St. George's game," Hunt said. "So definitely that one, and the USJ game."

Hunt has set personal goals for herself that she hopes to accomplish this season.

"I want to make all-region this season," Hunt said. "Hopefully, we go to state, and I want to make the all-state team."

The offseason has been a time of improvement for Hunt as she has worked on her own game to be prepared for the upcoming season.

"I have worked on my off-dribble shooting," she said. "That is where I was weakest last year. I want to be versatile and not a set shooter."

Since she has been there from the start and led the team each season in scoring, Hunt will leave Sacred Heart as the all-time leading scorer, and she will set the record high for those that come after her.

"It is definitely an honor," Hunt said. "It is nice to show people that even if you are not always winning there is something to work for. I set goals for myself in games, and that is how I went through the season."

A few schools have contacted Hunt to play in college, but she has not made a choice yet.

"I have talked to Brown, Morehead State and Earlham College," she said. "Hopefully a couple more will come into the picture during the season."
