Brentwood to get shot at 10th volleyball title

MURFREESBORO – The defending Class AAA volleyball champions will get a shot at a 10th title.

Siegel won’t get its first shot, however.

Brentwood beat host Siegel 3-0 in front of a rowdy crowd of Siegel and Brentwood students to reach the Class AAA championship game scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Siegel.

Brentwood won 25-14, 30-28, 25-14, claiming its third win over Siegel this season, but the first in the Lady Stars’ gym.

“The way I feel right now, ‘State tournament, our house. State tournament, party time for the Lady Bruins,'” Brentwood coach Barbara Campbell said. “We’re going to come in here. We’re going to relax, and we’re going to play ball.

“We’re going to be ready to go.”

Siegel later lost in five sets to Farragut in the losers bracket finals, eliminating the Lady Stars. Farragut won 15-13 in the decisive fifth set.

Brentwood (60-1) lost to Siegel in five games during the first week of the season. Brentwood is 60-0 since that loss, including 2-0 and 3-2 wins in the regular season over the Lady Stars.

“We were really excited because we know we’ve improved since the first game,” said Brentwood setter Katie Kemp, who had 45 assists. “They have a lot of seniors. We have a lot of younger players. We had a lot of room for growth.”

Brentwood is playing in its 17th state championship game under Campbell.

The Lady Bruins dominated the net, forcing Siegel’s hitters to alter their shots.

“Coach Campbell is great at looking at both sides, mentally and physically,” said Brentwood senior middle hitter Jennifer Roy. “We had an idea what they were going to go to with their strong hits and strong plays.

“We just went lights out and went for it. We were able to get in their heads a little.”

Freshman Garrett Joiner led Brentwood with 14 kills. Teammate Kaela Massey added 11 and Kamryn Carter had 10.

Roy had two blocks to pace the Lady Bruins. Massey had two aces. Brentwood students lined one section of stands facing both benches. Siegel students lined the majority of the bleachers behind the two teams.

“It was crazy,” Roy said. “The gym was rocking. But I think that’s just the way we liked it. It fueled us. It didn’t get us distracted as a team. It’s all about the energy.”

Brentwood volleyball coach Barbara Campbell and her squad will be playing for their 10th Class AAA state title Friday.
