HS BASKETBALL SUPER SENIOR: Greenfield has shot at state tourney behind Peoples

GREENFIELD – Everything.

That is the word the Greenfield girls’ basketball coach Willie Trevathan uses to describe what Brittany Peoples brings to the Lady Yellowjackets.

Peoples enters her senior season at Greenfield, and the team has high hopes of a postseason run behind her abilities.

“Obviously, she is a very vocal leader,” Trevathan said. “She is the voice of the team on the floor. She has been a four-year starter and named all-district and all-region.

“Everything we do goes through her, and she does a good job involving her teammates in the offense.”

As a junior, Peoples averaged 13.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and three steals.

“Almost everybody is back, and we want to go all the way,” Peoples said. “We have a lot of seniors in the starting line, and good subs coming off of the bench. We just have to play smart.”

Greenfield finished third in District 14-A behind Union City, the 2014 Class A state champion, and Gibson County. The Lady Yellowjackets will again have to compete against those teams to make a postseason run.

“We can’t let a night go by where we slack up on offense or defense,” Peoples said.

Peoples said that everyone in the community knows the potential for this year’s Greenfield team.

“We hear about it a lot out in the community that this should be our year,” Peoples said. “It is a little pressure, but all of the seniors know that we should make it to state.”

A good work ethic is something Peoples possesses, so she has been out working to improve during the offseason.

“I have worked on my shooting,” she said. “Every day I am out shooting the basketball.”

Playing in college is something she wants to do after she graduates in May, and a few schools have contacted her.

“Bethel, Southern Miss, Central Arkansas and Ole Miss have all contacted me,” Peoples said.

With a good season and deep postseason run to state, more schools might show interest in Peoples’ abilities.
