Big third quarter helps Centennial roll on road

After a defensive duel through most of the first two quarters Friday night, Centennial cranked out three touchdowns in the third period on its way to a 43-7 win over host Dickson County.

Running back Tyrel Dodson and receiver Emanuel Hall paced Centennial (8-1, 4-1 11-AAA) with two touchdowns each. Dickson County (2-8, 1-5) quarterback Jacob Williams connected with Kincaid Lewis in the fourth for the home team’s only TD.

“I thought Dickson County did a great job of changing up their game plan to obviously control the ball, control the clock to keep the ball out of our hands,” Centennial head coach Brian Rector said after the game. “We had to make the adjustments at halftime to figure out what best fit us to be able to score points, and that was obviously run the football.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Dodson capped Centennials’ first solid push down the field with a 5-yard TD run with 6:43 to play before halftime. The visitors then showed some variety with quarterback Connor Rietveld connecting with Hall for his first touchdown catch.

It was obvious that Centennial was looking to establish the run game in the third quarter. Dodson and Deon Sanders each scrambled on scoring runs — 22 yards for Dodson and 22 yards for Sanders — as Centennial grabbed a 29-0 lead. Trent McDermott then intercepted a Dickson County pass and ran it back 24 yards for a touchdown to give Centennial a 36-0 lead.

Dickson County didn’t go away quietly though and continued to battle on defense. Enoch Williams snagged a fumbled while Steel Cliton and Collier Wolcott either earned tackles for a loss or a quarterback sack.

The home team’s offense finally battled their way into the end zone in the fourth with Williams’ 66-yard pass to Lewis.

“I’m really proud of how our kids came out. They had plenty of fight and were trying to power through them,” Dickson Co. head coach Troy Williams said.

“They’re not as big as other teams have been so, we were trying to take advantage of that. In the beginning we did a good job, playing great defense.”

Hall scored on a 68-yard pass play in the fourth for Centennial’s final points.
