Westmoreland hammers Harpeth, 53-20

Westmoreland dominated the start of both the first and second halves on Friday evening, rolling to a 53-20 victory over visiting Harpeth at Eagle Stadium.

The Eagles scored the game’s first 18 points and then reeled off 22 consecutive points to start the second half, extending a 12-point halftime lead to 47-13.

“We did let up a little bit,” Westmoreland senior center Mason Scruggs said. “We didn’t play to our full potential like we did in the first quarter.”

The Indians (4-5, 2-3 District 9-AA) scored on the final play of the first half as senior quarterback Jett Brinkley rolled to his left and lofted a pass that landed in the arms of junior Bradley Baker in the back of the end zone for a 31-yard score.

“It was a lift,” Harpeth head coach Doug Loope said. “We just weren’t able to sustain it.”

The Eagles (7-2, 4-1) scored on their first two possessions of the second half, a 45-yard run by senior wingback Brad Evans and a 39-yard dash by junior fullback Dylan Todd.

Then, Westmoreland senior wingback Chance Hall had a 7-yard touchdown run with 10:01 remaining, and the Eagles led by 34 points after junior Houston Wischmeier’s point-after kick.

The Eagles rushed for 437 yards, averaging better than 10 yards per carry.

Todd rushed for 179 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries, eclipsing the 1,200-yard mark this season. Sophomore fullback Hunter Crowson and Evans finished with 94 and 86 rushing yards, respectively.

“You have terrific runners like Dylan Todd, Brad Evans, Bayle Kirk and others,” Scruggs said. “Our offensive line is trusting each other to do their job. We all just work as a team.”

Westmoreland secured second place in 9-AA with the victory.

Harpeth is hoping to earn an at-large berth to the Class 3A playoffs.

Brinkley completed 13 of 30 passes for 186 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, and Indians junior T.C. Newton caught five passes for 86 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown in the final period.
