H.S. FOOTBALL: Crockett Co. dominates Lexington

LEXINGTON – Friday night’s football game between Lexington and Crockett County, particularly beginning in the second quarter, went about the way each team’s season has gone.

Everything went right for Crockett County.

Nearly nothing went right for Lexington.

In the end, the Cavaliers went home with a 48-0 victory and a perfect 9-0 record.

Crockett County head coach Kevin Ward told his team after the game going undefeated has never been a goal for him or for the program.

“Well I guess it is now since we’re one game away,” Ward said when asked about it. “But winning the district, beating good teams and winning championships are the goals we have.”

Crockett County running back Johnny Jones rushed for 187 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Cavaliers to the win. He finished the game 33 yards short of reaching 2,000 yards for the season.

“I talked to one of the assistant coaches that I’m close to about staying in there a little while longer, but he said save it for next week,” Jones said. “But we had a good game plan, and everybody did their jobs well.

“I’m glad to be able to get in there and do what my team needs me to do for us to be successful.”

For Lexington, all isn’t lost as the Tigers will probably finish second in District 14-AA and will possibly play at home for the first round of the Class 4A playoffs if they are drawn in Quad 3.

Injuries have hurt the team throughout the season, and they didn’t help in this game.

“We played well for a quarter, quarter-and-a-half, but Johnny Jones is a fast back that’s hard to chase down when he gets in open space,” Lexington coach Bryant Hollingsworth said after the game.

Hollingsworth said the good thing is the Tigers still probably have plenty of football left to play, and they need to be ready to come back from the loss ready to work.

“The second season starts in a couple weeks,” Hollingsworth said. “They need to move past this game, learn the lessons we need to learn from this and come back ready to work next week.”

Lexington will host Fayette-Ware next week to wrap up the regular season. Crockett County will go on the road to play Westview in the District 13-AA championship game.

Ward challenged the team to return to practice next week in a playoff-type mindset.

“Pretty soon, we’ll be in a win-or-go-home situation, so go ahead and prepare yourselves for that time,” Ward said. “We had a good week of practice this week, not great but good. And we can improve as a team.”
