H.S. FOOTBALL: Westview beats McKenzie

Michael Young

McKENZIE – Westview held McKenzie to three points in the first quarter despite the Rebels having the ball inside the 10-yard line twice, breaking open the lead in the second half to win 36-10.

“We stopped them inside the 10-yard line twice,” said Westview head coach Don Coady. “We don’t see a lot of teams who play the option and when we had our backs against the goal line, we were able to tighten it up a little bit.”

Westview got on the board on their first drive, moving downfield without much resistance and scoring on a 12-yard quarterback keeper with 7:34 in the first quarter to give the Chargers the early 7-0 lead. McKenzie responded on its next drive by getting inside the Charger 10-yard line, but settled on a field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.

The McKenzie defense forced Westview to punt and the Rebel offense moved the ball down the field, but on 4th and goal on the six-yard line, the Rebels elected to go for it instead of kicking another field goal. The pass was incomplete.

Westview moved the ball down the field from their own six-yard line but faced fourth down on the McKenzie 25. The Chargers not only would convert but found the end zone with 7:22 in the second quarter took the 14-3 lead.

Westview found three more points on a 32-yard field goal with 23 seconds left in the half to go up 17-3.

Down two touchdowns, McKenzie attempted an onside kick to open the second half but Westview recovered it at McKenzie’s 49-yard line. Westview scored less than four minutes later on a pass from Dallas Callins to Jason Hicks to push the score to 24-3.

Westview’s defense stepped up in the second half, intercepting McKenzie on its next two drives. The second interception was taken back by Hicks 65 yards for the touchdown.

McKenzie’s Jack Surber, under pressure during the entire second half, found Montell Adkisson in the end zone to cut the lead to 30-10 with 11:23 remaining in the game. McKenzie recovered the onside kick, but turned the ball over on downs back to Westview.

Westview’s Tyler Smith ran for the final score.
