H.S. FOOTBALL: Golden Tide falls to Union City
UNION CITY – Union City took the opening possession of the game for a touchdown and never let up as they dominated the Trenton Peabody Golden Tide, 42-16.
Union City wasted little time getting its first points of the night as it took six plays to score its first touchdown as running back Alex Reid scored on a 1-yard run around the edge that gave the Golden Tornadoes an early 7-0 advantage.
Peabody came out in its opening offensive drive and showed the potential to move the ball on the Union City defense. However, the drive stalled just after midfield.
With 7:58 left in the second quarter, Peabody kicker Drew Sanders booted a 37-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.
Union City countered with an offensive attack of their own set up with a 46-yard pass from Garrett Walton to Reid.
Two plays later, Walton scored on a 1-yard dive to stretch Union City’s lead to 14-3.
Peabody struck back quickly as Kendrick Malone connected with Pickard on a 66-yard connection keeping Peabody within reach at 14-10.
Just before the half, the Peabody offense had two consecutive fumbles on drives that led to Union City touchdowns as the Golden Tornadoes led 28-10.
The third quarter scoring happened when Union City running back Ricky Henry, who finished the game with 142 rushing yards, scored on a 1-yard dive to make the score 35-10.
Peabody struck back quickly again as Malone connected with Rico Buchanan on a 61-yard touchdown pass.
Ricky Henry added another touchdown in the fourth for Union City on a 1-yard dive to make the final score 42-16.
Peabody will host Humboldt next week. Union City goes to Halls.
