H.S. FOOTBALL: Crusaders cruise over Trojans

The Jackson Sun

MILLINGTON – Liberty Tech’s football team was playing at a high level going into its game at Millington on Friday.

After beating Millington 63-10, the Crusaders continue to play at that high level.

“We appear to be playing our best ball of the season so far right now,” said Liberty head coach Steve Hookfin. “I hope when the season is over this isn’t our best ball. I hope it keeps getting better because the competition will get tougher.”

Running back Devin Bush had 15 carries on the night and made the most of his opportunities. He accounted for 290 yards on the ground and six touchdowns.

“Every week we talk about how special of an athlete Devin is, and he is that,” Hookfin said. “But the line in front of him did a great job coming off the ball and holding their blocks.

“Everybody did their job tonight.”

Liberty led early with a 14-3 advantage after the first quarter, but the second quarter was when the Crusaders took over as they outscored the home team 28-7 in the period.

Bush had a pair of runs in the quarter, and Alec Long took an interception back 35 yards for another score.

Quarterback Corey Newble also scored.

“Corey has done a good job leading this offense and just simply doing his job and not trying to do too much,” Hookfin said. “When your players are doing that, you’re putting yourself in a good position to be successful.”

Bush actually ran for two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters.

Willie Pearson finished off the scoring with a 52-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The Crusaders don’t have a lot of time to celebrate as they will finish the regular season on Thursday against Ripley.

“It’s a short week for us, and we know we’re in for a dogfight next week,” Hookfin said.
