Siegel blanked 6-0 by Houston

Siegel’s turnaround season came to an abrupt ending Wednesday against the defending Class AAA girls soccer champions.

Houston, ranked ninth nationally, shut out the Lady Stars 6-0 at Richard Siegel Soccer Complex in the state quarterfinals.

“We escaped some near misses in the first half,” Siegel coach Eric Shelton said. “But you’ve got to expect it from a team like Houston.

“They have a very potent offense. Our defenders did everything they could for 40 minutes. We knew we weren’t going to hold them to a shutout. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to generate very many offensive opportunities.”

Siegel (12-5-4) was a decisive underdog against Houston (19-0-2).

Houston has not lost a game since Siegel beat the Lady Mustangs in the 2012 state tournament.

Still, Siegel held Houston to just one goal — an unassisted score by Paola Ellis in the 28th minute — at halftime.

But Houston scored twice in the first six minutes of the second half to push the lead to 3-0. Jayden Hildreth scored on an unassisted goal in the first minute of the second half. Ellis scored her second goal off a pass from Hildreth in the 46th minute.

Robyn Salzer’s goal off a pass from Jillian Hildreth in the 58th minute made it 3-0.

Jillian Hildreth made it 4-0 when she scored in the 68th minute.
