Eagleville beats Community, earns playoff spot

Needing a win to get to the playoffs, Eagleville used every down to get there — at least early on.

The Eagles posted their fourth shutout of the season and earned a sixth straight postseason berth after a 27-0 win against visiting Community on Friday night.

“We’ve been working hard trying to get there, and now we’ve made it,” said Eagleville receiver Brandon Petrig, who caught three passes, two of which were touchdowns.

Eagleville had to work a little harder in the first half Friday night.

While the Eagles (6-4, 3-5 9-A) were 0-for-4 on third down in the first half, they managed to convert both fourth-down attempts to score the game’s first points.

After Community (0-10, 0-6) turned the ball over at its own 45 on the game’s first drive, Eagleville made up the difference in 10 plays. Quarterback A.J. Garza helped convert both fourth downs, following the pile for a 5-yard sneak on fourth-and-1 and using a play-action pass and rolling to the left to find a wide-open Petrig in the end zone.

The two connected again just before halftime.

Garza added a 7-yard touchdown run to start the fourth quarter, and Cameron Lawson ran in from 18 yards out early in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

Community failed on its first nine third-down attempts en route to a 2-for-12 finish with four turnovers-on-downs and the game’s two turnovers.

“Our defense has played great all year, and tonight was no exception,” Eagleville coach Steve Carson said.

Eagleville remained undefeated in the series, pushing its record to 8-0. It was the fourth shutout for the Eagles, who have outscored Community 285-92 in series.
