CPA beats Lipscomb 40-0

CPA linebacker Jay Hockaday (12) brings down Lipscomb Academy fullback Thomas Story (12) on Friday, November 21, 2014, in the Class 3A quarterfinals.

It’s hard to say which unit was more impressive during Friday’s Class 3A quarterfinal — CPA’s offense or defense.

Actually, a case could be made for the Lions’ special teams unit, too.

Performing crisply in essentially every capacity, CPA rolled to a 40-0 home victory over Lipscomb Academy to advance to the semifinals. The Lions (13-0) will visit Milan next week in a rematch of a regular-season game that CPA won 42-7.

Against Lipscomb (9-4), Zack Weatherly passed for 152 yards and rushed for 52 more, including two short touchdown runs. J.R. Osborn had a big night on special teams with two long punt returns.

“Go out and do your job — that’s what we preached all week during practice,” said CPA coach Ingle Martin. “I am especially proud of the seniors tonight and the way they came through on their last game in their home stadium.”

The CPA offense efficiently and effectively mixed the run and the pass.

Weatherly completed 8 of 12 passes, including an 18-yard touchdown pass to Price Perdue in the third quarter. Wallace Barrett ran for a team-high 93 yards on 11 carries, highlighted by a 14-yard touchdown run on his final rush of the night.

Osborn, a senior, provided the special-team fireworks for CPA with his two long first-half punt returns that set up short touchdowns and set the tone for the night. Osborn returned the first punt of the game 48 yards to the Lipscomb 4 and later added a 53-yard return that once again put the Lions inside the Lipscomb 10.

“We take a lot of time focusing on special teams,” said Osborn, “and tonight, everything just clicked for us. We had good set-up and good blocking, and it provided a big spark for us.”

The Lions’ defense did its part by limiting Lipscomb to one first down in the first half and just 121 yards of total offense for the game.

Jay Hockaday and Chip Omer helped put CPA in command with short touchdown runs in the first quarter, and Weatherly rushed for two TDs in the second quarter as the Lions built a 27-0 lead.

The Lipscomb defense came up with a goal-line stand on CPA’s final possession of the first half.

Thomas Story led Lipscomb with 60 yards on 12 carries.

CPA scored touchdowns on four its first five possessions while rolling out to a 27-0 halftime lead.
