Ole Miss offers scholarship to CPA's Tyger Campbell

Christ Presbyterian Academy’s Tyger Campbell hasn’t even started high school yet, but that hasn’t stopped the 5-foot-11, 145-pound eighth-grader from locking down a starting spot at one of the area’s premier basketball programs.

His youth hasn’t kept college programs away, either.

Campbell was extended a scholarship offer from Ole Miss after Saturday’s 76-58 win over University School of Jackson, CPA coach Drew Maddux said.

It wasn’t the first for Campbell – he also has an offer from Western Kentucky – and it certainly won’t be the last for the talented youngster, who won’t graduate high school until 2019.

“It’s pretty incredible,” Maddux said. “You’re talking about a young man that’s obviously very special and gifted. When you watch him play, it doesn’t take long to realize the potential he has. Obviously a lot can happen between now and that day – signing with a Division I school – but if everything aligns, he’ll certainly have an opportunity to be a great player at that level.”

Campbell already has made a big impact for the Lions (3-0) this season. He’s averaging 17 points, eight assists and 3.5 steals, helping his teams to victories over Cane Ridge, Columbia Academy and USJ.

“He’s just so advanced for his age,” Maddux said. “He has tremendous basketball IQ, court presence and vision, and he’s an outstanding teammate. He’s so unselfish and he’s always thinking of others first.”
