H.S. BOYS' B-BALL: Tomcats remain unbeaten with win

BROWNSVILLE – With a packed gym and standing room only in Brownsville on Tuesday night, the Haywood County Tomcats pulled away in the second half with a victory over the Westview Chargers, 70-61.

The game started out with Haywood racing out to an early 7-2 lead before a Westview timeout.

After the timeout, Westview countered with a run of its own as they took the lead 12-7 after a Garrett Sams 3-point basket.

At the end of one, the game was tied at 17.

The second quarter was much like the first quarter.

Haywood used its defensive pressure and 3-point shooting to put some distance between themselves and Westview.

James Davidson would connect on three 3-pointers in the second quarter and Haywood as a team hit five.

The lead at the half was 38-30 in favor of Haywood.

The third quarter continued as an uptempo game which saw a highlight dunk by Jordon Varnado that kept the Haywood lead at eight.

Westview countered with a mini-run in the final minute of the third quarter to cut the lead down to five making it 50-45 headed into the fourth quarter.

Westview continuously kept the game at a five-to-seven-point game throughout the fourth, but could not get it any closer.

After some made foul shots down the stretch, Haywood pulled away with a victory over the Westview Chargers, 70-61.

Westview was led in scoring by Garrett Sams and Parker Beal with 13 apiece.

Haywood was led in scoring by Varnado with 19.

After a very slow first half, both teams caught fire in the second half as Westview battled back from a 13-point deficit but lost to Haywood, 57-48.

Haywood was led in scoring by Jamirah Shutes with 13 points.

Westview was led in scoring by Lydia Pritchett with a game-high 17 points.
