Hampton unable to outlast Lady Rebels

It was a battle from the opening tip. However, the Lady Bulldogs were unable to overcome a sluggish start to the third quarter.

Hampton was unable to mount a late rally as they fell 71-59 to conference foe South Greene on Tuesday night in Hampton.

After Rachel Crum hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Rebels an early 5-0 lead, Hampton answered with a 10-0 run that included four points from freshman Shyanne Tuelle. The Lady Bulldogs extended the lead to seven points off of four consecutive points from Alexus Grubbs, but Peyton Williams countered with four straight points of her own to cut the South Greene deficit to 19-17 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Rebels picked up where they left off to start he second quarter as Taylor Lamb scored the first three points of the frame to help South Greene run to a 10-2 run. Alexus Grubbs snapped the run for Hampton with a trey and Hope Bridgeman drained a 3-pointer. However, South greene used a 6-2 run in the final minute to take a 38-30 lead into the half.

The Lady Rebels started the third quarter with the first six points to extend the advantage to 15 points. However, Megan Garland and Madi Weir hit big baskets to help the Lady Bulldogs go on a 14-1 run that was capped by four points from Grubbs. South Greene benefited in the final minute of the third from a technical on the Hampton bench that set up two Lamb free throws as well as a Crum bucket as the Lady Rebels held a 52-48 advantage entering the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, it was the Lady Rebels who started the quarter on a 12-2 run sparked by baskets by Lamb and Lindsey Cutshaw. It took Hampton nearly five minutes to record their first field goal of the quarter, and that set the Lady Rebels up to secure the win at the line.

Grubbs led the way for Hampton with 21 points, while Tuelle tallied 13 points. Tatum Street and Garland had eight and seven points, respectively.

Lamb led South Greene with 19 points, while Cutshaw and Willams had 13 and 12 points, respectively. Wykle tallied 11 points in the game.
