The Summit Spartans made school history a year ago when they claimed first place in the Charger Invitational  for their first-ever wrestling tournament championship.

The AAA team from Spring Hill proved the first time wasn’t a fluke as they outlasted Red Bank and 19 other teams in the field as they won this year’s tournament at Chattanooga Christian School on Saturday  with 223.5 points, five champions and 11 total medalists.

Red Bank, which trailed by 28 points going into the championship and consolation finals, ended up with four champions and 11 total medalists too, but finished a close second with 215 points.

The Hopkinsville Tigers were third with 101 points while Signal Mountain was fourth with 96.5 and Cumberland County fifth with 67.

The Best Match award went to the 145-pound championship match where Chattanooga Christian’s Justin Wheeler nipped Red Bank’s David Johnson in a 2-1 squeaker.

Red Bank’s Devin Crawl, who defeated defending state champion Cale Shelton of Signal Mountain by a 6-5 margin in the 182-pound final, was honored as the Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.

Summit is coached by former Cleveland standout Pete Miller, the son of former Blue Raider coach Al Miller.  He was reasonably happy after his team won its second tournament title of the season and finishing second last weekend at the McGavock tournament.

“Overall, we had a pretty good day.  We brought a dozen kids and 11 of them placed, but this is a great tournament for us as we head into the Christmas break,” Miller said before his heavyweight wrestled.

“These kids are learning how to win.  We don’t always have the best technique, but they always wrestle hard.  It’s always nice to come back to Chattanooga, but I’m hoping that we can make it to the State Duals.  But I’m really happy with what we did today as we’ve had a good weekend here,” he added.

Red Bank coach Shane Turner knew his team might have a tougher time after defending state champ Gabe McDuffie hurt his ribs in a dual meet against East Ridge on Thursday and had to watch in street clothes.

Despite McDuffie’s absence, the Lions came within shouting distance of pulling out the championship.

“We entered 13 and 11 placed, so I’m pleased with where we are at the mid-point of the season.  This has been a decent tournament for us, although we left a few points out there.  But we also had two unseeded wrestlers place, so those were unexpected points.

“That win by Devin Crawl at 182 was big time as Cale Shelton is a quality wrestler, but Devin is a special kid and I’m thrilled for him.  But we’re coming along as a team and 21-2 at the break, so that’s not too bad,” Turner concluded with a smile.

Summit’s five champs included Nathan Porter at 113, Sean Butler at 126, Esteban Remillard at 132, Sawyer Knott at 138 and Mark Sweeney at 152.

Red Bank’s champions included Blake Reichel at 106, Trent Comeaux at 120, Crawl at 182 and Christian Jackson at 195.

Other winners included Hopkinsville’s Nate Williams at 160, CAK’s Ryan Long at 170, Cumberland County teammates Dalton Davis at 220 and David Scavo at 285 and Wheeler of CCS.

Signal Mountain followed Summit and Red Bank with five medalists, including three seconds and two thirds.
