GIRLS’ POW: Neyman playing solid in post for South Gibson

Michael Odom

Eric Volbert is now in his second year in charge of the South Gibson girls’ basketball team.

Last year, the Lady Hornets were young with little varsity experience.

The youthfulness continued at the start of this season as South Gibson started 3-3.

But since that start, the Lady Hornets have gone on a five-game winning streak, avenging an earlier loss and finishing off two season sweeps of Jackson teams.

Junior Hope Neyman has been a catalyst to the success with her play in the post. In three games this past week, Neyman scored 58 points.

Her biggest performance was the one to start the week as she scored 27 points in a win over Trenton Peabody, a team the Lady Hornets lost to early in the season.

She followed that with 18 points against Madison and 13 points against Obion County.

South Gibson lost to Obion County to end the five-game winning streak. But during the last three weeks, the Lady Hornets have picked up momentum with a majority of their District 13-AA schedule to come.

The loss to Obion County ended the schedule until after Christmas. South Gibson will participate in the Huntingdon Point Guard Christmas Classic with games against West Carroll (Dec. 29) and Huntingdon (Dec. 30) before kicking off the second half of the season.

If South Gibson is going to have success against District 13-AA teams like Dyersburg, Westview, Obion County, Crockett County and Milan, Neyman’s post presence will be crucial.
