SMYRNA – Columbia’s Cole Flatt and Friendship Christian’s Donny Turner captured bowling state titles on Friday at Smyrna Bowling Center.
Flatt, who advanced to the finals as the No. 6 seed, successfully defended his Division I crown by winning five straight matches on Friday. Included were victories over Summit’s Camden Gutshall (214-175) and Brentwood’s Kamron Doyle (236-224), who recently became the youngest bowler to win the Team USA Trials, a United States Bowling Congress tournament.
“It’s exciting,” said Flatt, who knocked off top-seeded Dustin Brakefield of Lebanon to claim the title, 226-213. “I don’t know what to say, I just kept grinding I guess … Consistency was key and I finished strong.”
Flatt also knocked off Chattanooga Central’s Reggie Long (193-172) and Middle College’s Terry Salvant (233-191) to reach the title match.
Turner, on the other hand, had a much lighter morning.
The junior, who finished fourth in Division II a season ago, entered the finals as the top seed. As a result of the step-ladder format — adopted by the TSSAA in 2014 — he only needed one win on Friday to secure the championship.
“I was really nervous before,” said Turner, who claimed the title with a 243-147 win over St. Benedict’s Conner Nichols. “I had two really good shots, and I didn’t know if I wanted to play straight or hook it more. I talked to some of my coaches and they all said that it’d be better if I played straight. I did that and it just worked really, really well.”
Donelson Christian Academy senior Bryan Crigger took fourth in Division II after earning wins over No. 6 Andrew Reese of St. Benedict (229-130) and No. 3 Kyle Frasure of Christian Brothers (185-140).
In the girls Division I tournament, Hardin County sophomore Ashley Channell took the title for the second straight year. The top-seeded Channell defeated Upperman senior Kenzie Bowman in the title match, 183-171.
Bowman rolled a 289 against Brentwood sophomore Camy Barber to earn a spot in the final.
“It was a good senior year,” said the runner-up Bowman. “I happened to shoot a 289. Nothing was really going through my mind, either. It was like I wasn’t really there, but I was.”
Barber, who captured wins over Stewarts Creek freshman Ashlyn Barkdull (145-136) and Sevier County junior McKenna Shaffer (157-154), took fourth place, while Barkdull finished fifth.
Girls Preparatory School senior Taylor Battle captured the Division II girls championship with a 192-184 win over St. Agnes senior Megan Wilson.
