Brentwood girls top Dickson Co. in 11-AAA showdown

The 11-AAA girls basketball standings got a little muddier Friday night.

Brentwood climbed into a first-place tie with Dickson County by knocking off the Lady Cougars 49-42 and earning a split in the season series.

Abby Shealy, Jenny Roy and Jessi Boozer all scored 10 for Brentwood (19-2, 8-1 11-AAA), while Payton Grove (11 points) and Carlee Wilson (10) paced Dickson County (21-2, 8-1).

“The focus for us was share the basketball and everybody make a contribution,” Brentwood coach Ronnie Seigenthaler said.

“At our place we didn’t do that and (Dickson County) got very relaxed, very comfortable. They had us on our heels. It was just a 180 from one matchup to the other.”

Brentwood wasted no time grabbing the lead, with Taylor Sexton scoring on a layup and Shealy sinking a 3-pointer to put the visiting team up 5-0 and eventually taking a 15-10 advantage after one period.

“We never could recover,” Dickson County coach Eve Hamilton said.

“We just struggled, didn’t execute. We didn’t make shots. Didn’t play great defense at times. When you do those things it’s hard to win.

“And (Brentwood) came to beat us, but that’s what makes a rivalry so good. In the tournament you’re not assured of anything.”

Brentwood maintained the five-point advantage (25-20) at halftime, thanks to another Shealy 3-pointer.

Early turnovers helped Dickson County grab brief momentum early in the third quarter as Lea Lea Carter and Grove capitalized offensively for the home team.

Brentwood didn’t get flustered though and stuck to its game plan.

“You have to be able to continue to apply pressure or the pressure flips on you and fortunately we weathered the one storm that they threw at us,” Seigenthaler said.

Brentwood carried a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter and never relinquished the advantage.
