Oakland’s McDaniel denies CBHS rumors

Oakland football coach Thomas McDaniel strongly denied a rumor on social media Tuesday stating that he would become the next high school football coach at Christian Brothers in Memphis.

McDaniel told The Daily News Journal that a tweet by Volquest.com reporter Austin Price stating that Christian Brothers would vote later this week to name him the next head coach was false.

“I’ve not been offered a job,” he said. “I have not accepted a job.”

However, Christian Brothers athletic director Mike Kelly told The Commercial Appeal that McDaniel is a finalist for the job along with others.

McDaniel could not confirm or deny that he was a finalist for any position when asked about Kelly’s comment to the Memphis newspaper.

Oakland principal Bill Spurlock said he has not been told by his football coach that he is resigning.

Christian Brothers finished 6-5 this past year under former coach Scott Vogel. CBHS lost to Chattanooga Baylor in the second round of the Division II-AA playoffs.

McDaniel, who is the Patriots’ football coach and school athletic director, is 68-20 at Oakland. Oakland won the Class 5A state championship in 2008 with a 20-13 victory over Franklin during his first season. Oakland finished 12-2 this past season, losing to eventual Class 6A state champion Maryville in the Class 6A state semifinals.

Christian Brothers is an all-boys school in Memphis competing in Division II-AA.

McDaniel has ties to Memphis. He graduated from Bartlett, which is located in the Memphis area. He also is familiar to Division II, which can offer need-based financial aid. He is a former assistant coach at Battle Ground Academy.

The Patriots currently have seven seniors that have committed to college football programs, including Tennessee early enrollee Jack Jones, Tennessee commitment Kyle Oliver and Vanderbilt commitment Josh Smith.
