Vikings secure runner-up in 14-A

HUMBOLDT – The Halls Tigers made the trip to Humboldt on Tuesday night for a huge 14-A matchup that had major implications for the second and third seeds in District 14-A.

Humboldt used a strong fourth quarter and held off Halls to secure second place by the score of 52-50.

"I knew this game was going to go down to the wire as Halls is a great team," said Humboldt coach Ron Abernathy. "This was a complete team effort by my guys, and I am proud of them for that."

The first quarter started out at a quick pace as both teams got several shots up early.

Both teams held leads throughout the first quarter with the biggest coming when Humboldt's Kaylon Thomas went on his own 5-0 run with a 3-pointer followed by a lay-up, putting Humboldt up 13-10.

Thomas finished with 13 points in the game.

Halls knocked down a 3-pointer to tie it at 13-13 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter continued much like the first as the teams went back and forth with the lead.

With 4:13 left in the half, Humboldt's Troy Agnew scored five consecutive points to put Humboldt up 22-21.

Agnew finished the game as the leading scorer for Humboldt with 15 points.

The game was tied at the half at 28-28.

The third quarter was a huge quarter for Halls.

Halls used a 10-2 run to take the biggest lead of the game by either team with three minutes left in the third quarter. Halls' Malik Rogers, who had 12 points in the game, made some big shots in the run.

At the end of the third quarter, Halls led 42-36.

Humboldt continued to fight back and controlled the fourth quarter, outscoring Halls 16-8.

With 59 seconds left in the game, Humboldt's Kaylon Thomas connected on a huge 3-pointer to put Humboldt up 50-49.

Humboldt's Jaylon Strayhorn, who finished in double figures with 11 points, had a monster block on the following possession, sealing the win for Humboldt by the score of 52-50.

Halls was led in scoring by Tavon King with a game-high 19 points. Myron McKinney also finished in double figures with 10.

"I was proud of my players’ effort tonight," Abernathy said. "We are going to turn our focus now to Friday night and prepare for another big district game for us against Greenfield."

Humboldt held a solid lead throughout the course of the game and was able to beat Halls.

Humboldt was led in scoring by Ty Nelson with 12 points.

Halls was led in scoring by Quin Wilder with a game-high 15 points. Keanna Gooch also was in double figures with 12 points.
